Racing Livery

This design focuses on Graphic Design, Communication, and Working with a Physical Medium.

This is Massimo’s 2003 Suzuki GSXR 750 race bike. He did the race preparations himself, and came to me with brand new blank bodywork to create a racing livery on. He is fairly new to motorsport and it gave us the opportunity to craft his identity as a rider from a fresh palette.

To begin, I talked with the rider about aesthetics he likes, what he wants to represent, and the mood he wants to convey with his design. We created mockups and discussed the direction he wanted to go in.

After several iterations, we decided that a simple black and white livery with gold accents would suit his needs. He didn’t want anything garish, or to look like every other race bike in the field. He also didn’t have as many big racing sponsors, so he didn’t need his bike to look overly serious.

The design was broken into small details, then re-created in Illustrator as vector paths. The vinyl plotter traced the paths and we laid out the trimmed stickers on the bare bodywork to mock up the final placement.

After the stickers were all cut and finalized, I gathered all the body work and did the final positioning.
